Dwight’s Story

I first met Dwight when I was volunteering at Purrfect Companions of Norfolk cat rescue in Delhi, Ontario. His shelter name was Woneer (pronounced One-ear, because of his wonky ear).  The lady who brought him to the rescue had fed him and a few other kitties outside of her home for 5 years. Unfortunately this means that this tough guy endured at least 5 Canadian winters outside. His rescuer said that he was especially difficult to catch and it was finally by using a live trap that she was able to bring him to the shelter.

When he was brought in to the rescue he was sick, flea and ear mite infested and very matted and dirty. But even in his unfortunate state, he absolutely stole my heart. It was clear that he had been through a lot, because when I approached him he would cower in his kennel. However, after he realized that I meant him no harm, he would gently head butt my hand for pats and roll over for belly rubs. I knew I had to take him home.

On top of everything else, Dwight has Feline Immunoficienctcy Disorder (Read more about FIV Here!)

This means that if he gets sick his immune system may have a harder time fighting off illness. This only made me want to give him a home more because I knew many people would not want to adopt a cat with so much "baggage".

When my partner and I first brought him to our apartment, he would spend a lot of his time hiding behind our bed. He clearly loved people but he was scared of his new environment. He would get spooked by random things like the coffee maker beeping, the hair dryer, sudden movements, his shadow, etc. The first night we were able to coax him out of his hiding spot with treats and he cuddled up with us on the couch. We all watched The Office together, hence the name Dwight, after our favorite character from the show. He has now been with us for almost a year and has shown us his truly unique personality. He is no longer scared of random noise or movements.

He has found his inner kitten and loves to play with his string toys and catnip mice, and runs to the door greeting us with his chatter when we arrive home.

Dwight And Moody!

Dwight now has a brother named Moody, who at first glance, looks like Dwight’s twin (they even share the same ears!)

He keeps us very entertained and we couldn't ask for a better companion.
